My loves: rugged beaches, beautiful views, collecting shells, coffee, hikes with my family, my Golden Retriever – Elliot, sleeping, noisy dinners, laughter around the table, Autumn, white, the power of nature, the smell of rain in summer, humid Adelaide evenings, coffee, not burning dinner, my parents’ studio, my children playing (nicely) together, a tidy house (very rare), coffee, movie nights, the power of a photograph.
We have three babies. And we were crazy enough to have them all within three and a half years. (cudos to mums of multiples)
Those years are a blur of sleepless nights, a messy house and constantly preparing food.
But what I do remember, are little things. The hairy ears on my newborn son, and his enormous feet. The black, sticky up hair on my eldest daughter. The incredible wonder and happy imaginative play of my youngest.
And the absolute honour it was to hold them, feed them, and have them fall asleep against my chest.
I remember these because I photographed them. Those memories are right there. In that album. On that wall. On that mantle piece. In turn, they spark more memories, we tell more stories and we are transported back. As though it was yesterday.
For me, the creation of images goes far beyond the physical print, or even the image itself. It’s about the stories that are told. The memories they hold. How the heart skips a beat when you remember the little curl of hair on your newborn, the gappy smile of your 7 year old, or how your toddler laughed with his eyes closed.
I photograph for the stories. The connection. This short, fleeting period of time.
Because they will never be this small again.
Because nothing is more precious than this day.
